Review: Orangutans, quality cuisine, and heart-stealing sunsets in Borneo

The abundant beauty of nature and famous Malaysian hospitality make Borneo's Shangri-La Rasa Ria a top notch find for event and incentive planners.

Dawn breaks and the darkness recedes against a rainbow of pinks, reds and oranges. The sun is a scimitar in the sky, cresting slowly above the hazy horizon. The surrounding jungle and hills are still sleepy, aside from the rhythmic chirp of cicadas, with the ocean beginning to subtly glimmer as the sun makes its dramatic ascent.

Our group has just completed an arduous, but rewarding, sunrise hike, through jungle, uphill, to reach a summit which offers some of the best views on Borneo. The sunrise hike is a must-do, as lucky walkers may spot some of the wildlife that is nocturnal only, pointed out by Leslie, the hotel’s knowledgeable- and enthusiastic- guide.Hot coffee and pastries are served on our arrival, with plenty of time to take pictures and soak up the scenery.
