Most sustainable destinations of 2023

C&IT have used a strict criteria to tally the most environmentally-conscious countries of 2023 for your new year trips.

As sustainability secured its place as a top priority for planners in 2023, C&IT has combined data from the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), the Green Future Index (GFI), the EU’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and IQAir to tally the most and least environmentally sustainable countries of 2023.

1. SwedenPerhaps unsurprisingly, the most environmentally sustainable global destination of 2023 is Sweden. Ranking highly across all studies, Sweden comes 5th on the EPI scale, 9th for GFI and fourth for the lowest annual average PM2.5 concentration at 6.6μg/m³.
