Singapore: A premier destination for creating lasting impact

A fundraising walkathon was organised alongside the 14th World Stroke Congress held in Singapore to commemorate World Stroke Day. About 800 people, including volunteers and stroke survivors took part in the Stepping Out For Stroke walkathon, raising over S$500,000

In this exclusive video, C&IT speaks with two key figures behind major international business events, exploring why Singapore is the destination of choice for events looking to create positive outcomes and lasting legacies.

Mr. Chew Ghim Bok, host organising committee chair of the 2024 Rotary International Convention, discusses how Singapore secured the bid for the convention, which brought together 14,000 Rotarians from more than 200 countries over five days. One of the event’s key legacies was the launch of a Mangrove Conservatory by the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), supported by the Foundation of Rotary Clubs Singapore. The conservatory aims to serve as a platform for education and research, focusing on the identification and development of mangrove strains and solutions to help Singapore and the region combat global warming and rising sea levels.

Similarly, Dr. Deidre Anne De Silva, neurologist at the National Neuroscience Institute, SingHealth, and Chair of the scientific and local organising committees for the 14th World Stroke Congress, explains why Singapore was the ideal host for this event – held for the first time in Southeast Asia. She highlights Singapore's world-class healthcare system and regional influence as key factors. The Congress attracted more than 4,400 delegates who gathered to discuss scientific breakthroughs, foster dialogue and promote collaboration among practitioners globally, with a particular focus on addressing the high prevalence of stroke in Southeast Asia.

A significant legacy initiative of the Congress was a fundraising walkathon on World Stroke Day (29 October 2022), which raised more than S$500,000 to support local stroke survivors and their caregivers. Additionally, 17 iconic landmarks in downtown Singapore, including Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands and the Singapore Flyer, were illuminated in blue to mark the occasion.

This video highlights Singapore’s strengths as a premier MICE destination, showcasing its exceptional global connectivity, world-class infrastructure, and the support of the Singapore Tourism Board and local partners. Together, they empower events to drive meaningful change and leave a lasting impact.
